Marine Protected Area
Outreach and Education Small Grants Program
Overview
The goal of the Marine Protected Area Outreach and Education Small Grants Program (MPA Small Grants Program) is to increase outreach and education, enhance marine stewardship, and improve compliance with MPA regulations statewide. Through small grants and technical assistance, the MPA Small Grants Program creates tools and resources that communicate and convey the value of MPAs, the importance of MPA regulations, and the wonder of the unique marine biodiversity of the California Coast—and builds the present and next generation of ocean stewards.
Since 2017, Coastal Quest has run four rounds of the MPA Small Grants Program with support from the Ocean Protection Council (OPC) through the Once-Through Cooling Mitigation Fund, The Marisla Foundation, the Maxwell/Hanrahan Foundation, and the David and Lucile Packard Foundation.
Through outreach and education efforts designed specifically for priority communities (e.g., communities in need of environmental justice, disadvantaged communities, Tribes, tribal organizations, etc.), the Program has built the collective capacity of organizations to provide tools, resources, and community to encourage MPA and coastal access, enjoyment, and protection.
