Marine Protected Area Outreach and Education Small Grants Program, Round 1
The first round of the MPA Outreach and Education Small Grants Program distributed funds to the 14 MPA regional collaboratives throughout California. This first round of grant funding was considered a pilot to understand the impact and scalability of the grant program in the future. Projects were kept relatively small in scope and the regional collaboratives were given freedom to build a project around the needs of the MPAs in their region.
Supported projects aligned with California’s MPA Management Program focus areas, including:
- Outreach and education
- Enforcement and compliance
- Research and monitoring
Round 1 Impact
Projects during the first round of grant funding achieved the following outcomes:
- Increased MPA stewardship in local communities
- Increased MPA compliance with consumptive users
- Increased MPA Compliance with non-consumptive users
- Increased citizen science research and monitoring to inform MPA Watch.
Through the first round of funding, grantees accomplished the following:
- Held 48 outreach events
- Held 12 workshops and trainings
- Developed 11 brochures
- Developed 8 videos
- Developed 7 toolkits
- Developed 6 manuals and guides
- Developed 3 online resources
- Created 2 posters
- Created 2 activity books
